Stan Van Gundy had some curious words for the New Yorks Knicks organization after visiting Gotham City Monday night. He was wondering why the Knicks would pretend to honor Patrick Ewing as one of their legends and most valued players in franchise history and yet never give him a position within the organization.
Via the Associated Press and ESPN.com:
"I'm not trying to needle anybody or tell them their business," Van Gundy said after Orlando beat the Knicks 106-102. "What's amazing is they honor the guy, I don't know, every year. They honor him, but while they've got a lot of ex-players in their organization, they've never made any move to try to hire him. That to me is amazing."
So it seems like Stan Van Gundy either wants to pleasantly get rid of Patrick Chewing or he's possibly just being a good guy, despite what Shaq thinks, and is trying to get an assistant, who has helped in molding Dwight Howard into the player he is today, a job.
He continued with this:
"So you know, it's been amazing and it's been our fortune in Orlando, that it's pretty amazing that with the ex-players that they hire here to me, there hasn't been a move. There are other ex-players that got interviews for their head coaching job, but then a guy who's been in the league with three different teams as an assistant can't get an interview."
This was a weird part of the quote for me, personally. That seems like a weird way to cover your ass and try to "pretend" that you want Ewing on your staff still. It's like saying, "God, this girlfriend I have really should be dating a much better looking guy. She should be dating Steve. Steve has a nice physique, more money, and a really nice car. I mean, I'm glad that she's dating me. But, whew, Steve is crazy not to ask her out." SVG keeps getting weirder and weirder. I can't wait until he doesn't care anymore like Don Nelson.
