The Bill Simmons for Minnesota Timberwolves GM campaign has officially started. Bill threw his name into the proverbial hat after the Wolves' brain trust (and I use both of those words extremely loosely) stopped considering a D-League team owner and turned their attention to Randy Pfund who's name is as confusing as his tenure in Miami. Bill said this via his twitter account:

@sportsguy33 - Hey T-Wolves fans: I am ready to launch the "Simmons for GM" campaign if you are. Already on record as loving 'Sota.

So there you have it. He even stated, "PS: Here's my offer to the T-Wolves. 3-year deal, first year for free as long as I can write a book about Season 1. I am dead-serious."

At this point, I don't really know how it could get any worse. The remaining T'Wolves fans watched Kevin McHale bat our hopes and dreams of success around like a cat with a ball of yarn for around 15 years
. He teased us like a hot girl in skimpy clothing dropping pencils left around. He gave us Kevin Garnett and Stephon Marbury. Then the whole money situation with Steph was mildly mismanaged as Marbury's ego grew out of control. They tried to replace him with a brittle Terrell Brandon, which only worked when he was healthy (not often enough). McHale gave us Wally Szczerbiak who was better at stealing passes from his own teammates than defending his opponents. There was William Avery, Paul Grant, and Ndubi Ebi as wasted first round picks.

And don't forget about the Joe Smith debacle and the Marko Jaric abortion. I don't think we have to worry about Bill Simmons doing any of those things. Bill loves Al Jefferson from his days as a Celtic and will be much better at surrounding him with talent than McHale was at surrounding Kevin Garnett with a decent roster. We don't have to worry about Bill downgrading at point guard (Cassell for Jaric) AND giving a first round pick in doing so. We won't have to worry about Randy Foye being acquired for Brandon Roy's draft rights.

So yes, I do want Bill Simmons as the GM of this franchise. It would generate more positive public interest in this team than Kevin McHale could do in over a decade. It would provide us with a book of access into a world that most of us crave to know more about. It would give us the Bill Simmons Face when the team starts out 2-13 and we see him standing in the tunnel as he re-reads his contract for what the salary situation is when he gets fired. And the best part is that it couldn't be any worse than what McHale did to the franchise.

Bill Simmons For Wolves' GM:
It can't get any worse.

UPDATE: Bill Simmons is beginning to lobby hard for this. Here are his last five tweets.

@sportsguy33 -- T-Wolves prez Craig Wright: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Lobby him on my behalf. My question to Minny: Why not? You are irrelevant right now.

@sportsguy33 --
Minny's attendance in 2008-09: 27th overall. http://sports.espn.go.com/n... ... even with tons of family packs & discount deals.

@sportsguy33 -- Minny's record from 2006-2009: 111-217, no playoff appearances. PS: I am inviting Britt Robson to be my assistant GM. Simmons-Robson 2009!

@sportsguy33 -- Guys I would build around: Jefferson, Love, Brewer, Foye, 2009 No. 1 pick. My game plan: Emulating how Presti rebuilt the Zombie Sonics.

@sportsguy33 -- First big Minny idea: If we get eliminated from playoffs, tix rest of the way are half-price and season ticketholders get half-price refunds
